Tuesday Meme!

Caz did this cute little survey over at Cherry Blossoms and Vodka and I felt I was due for a meme. :)

So, here's to the Desert Island Game...

Which 5 movies, books and tv shows would you bring with you to a desert island?

Movies:
*Almost Famous
*Across the Universe
*The Family Stone
*Miracle
*Walk the Line

Books/Magazines:
*Harry Potter series (you know I can't pick just one!)
*Twilight series (again, not choosing...)
*Shopaholic series (ok, I'm just cheating now...)
*The Great Gatsby
*My Sister's Keeper

TV Shows:
*90210 (old and new...)
*Gossip Girl
*The Bachelor and The Bachelorette
*Full House (all seasons...)
*Dawson's Creek (all seasons...)

What would your top 5 be?

Basic etiquette

It just dawned on me that the girl I was dogsitting for didn't thank me. Not a voicemail, email or note left on the counter when she picked up the dog.

Isn't it proper to thank the person for doing something nice for you when you would have otherwise had to pay for the dog to be boarded? I would think so...

At first I was really hesitant to watch the dog, my job can be pretty demanding and if something goes wrong in my store I am held 100% responsible. I am gone for looooong hours. This is the reason I do not own a dog of my own and got a cat instead. I was going out of my way.

Maybe she's annoyed that I mentioned keeping him if she was still looking for a new home for him? I don't see why though, she's the one that approached my roommate and I about it almost 2 months ago. Now, she has changed her mind. It seems like, ok you didn't want him before when nobody else wanted him and now that someone wants him you don't want to give him up. Grr...

Buuuuuut, back to my point. Shouldn't she have said "THANK YOU"??? Isn't that basic etiquette or good manners? I'm not asking for a gift or money. Just a simple, "thanks" would suffice.

That's all. Rant over.

Little sweethearts <3

Something I am most passionate about is kids. I love kids and hope to someday have a family of my own. I have always been a kid at heart and can play with them for hours. When I was younger (probably somewhere between 11 and 13) my best friend at the time and I were inseparable as most girls that age are. She had a younger sister that was 4 or 5 at the time and my friend would always get mad at me because I would pay attention to her sister and let her tag along with us. Ha ha!

When I see children being neglected by their parents, or overhear their parents say something truly horrible in front of them I am disgusted. I manage a children's store so I see my fair share of children's tantrums and fits. It doesn't bother me, they're kids and kids throw fits. It only bothers me if parents give in right away and give them what they want. That is just asking for more.

Well, the other day this woman came in with her two small children and right away we knew she was not happy with her kids. Then we heard her say, "God, I hate kids."

Wtf?

Why would you say that within earshot of your children? I was so disturbed and disgusted by this woman. I wanted to shake some sense into her. Does she not realize the psychological damage she is probably doing to her small children? They are going to grow up thinking their mom hates them.

Then the other day I was enjoying a relaxing day at Barnes and Noble reading and a little girl probably around the age of 4 walks by my chair crying "Mommy, mommy!"

I look around to see if her mother is near and see nobody. I continue to keep my eye on her and was about to get up and take her to customer service when what appeared to be her mother walked up behind her. She wasn't frantic, she wasn't concerned and she seemed far more interested in finding the latest Jodi Picoult book then finding her lost 4 year old daughter.

Maybe I'm over reacting, or maybe it's because I am reading The Shack right now. I know how easy it is to lose a child, I've seen it happen several times in my stores during the past 5 years. They easily wander off and are easily distracted. Yet, that is even further a reason to keep a close eye on your children. There are just too many sickos out there that prey on these innocent children -- Maybe The Shack really is getting to me. What do you think?

Kindle...

I love new electronic gadgets. iPods, iPhones or Blackberries, laptops, digital cameras and portable dvd players -- I love them all!

There is one gadget I have been strongly against.

Kindle.

I know it's cool, I've always thought it was pretty sweet but I just loooove books. Ever since I was a little girl I have just loved checking out books from the library and browsing bookstores. I cannot imagine reading an entire book from this flat gadget that looks like a small notebook (only thinner). I'm not good at reading several pages on a computer screen, so how is this any different? For example when I finished the Twilight series I started reading Midnight Sun on Stephenie Meyer's website and it took me forever to finish! It was only 265 pages!

Kindle has been teasing me with it's features and convenience. Here are my reasons why I am now leaning towards needing a Kindle...

-I carry the book I'm currently reading everywhere with me, sometimes they're not tiny paperbacks but large hardcovers. It gets heavy! The Kindle would make traveling pretty darn convenient.

-Books are cheaper with the Kindle. Most books are only $9.99 on Amazon and download like music.

-It can hold all the books you're reading, so you always have them with you. This would be great for me since lately I tend to be in the middle of two or more books.

-You can highlight text or mark it passages in the book. There is also a keyboard so notes can be typed while reading the book. This would be great for me because I'm a dork that likes to look up words that I'm not sure of the meaning of later. Also, a lot of the times I get blog ideas while reading and forget to write them down, therefore forgetting what I wanted to blog about!

-Each book can turn into an audio book. Sweet! Audio books are what got me through the road trips from Iowa to South Carolina and vice versa.

Looks like I've pretty much convinced myself, huh? I think I have. This may be my next splurge! :)

What does everyone think of Kindle? Do you have one? What are your pros and cons for it?

Libby likes the Snuggie too!!

I think if I'm not careful she's going to take over the Snuggie! Maybe I will have to buy one just for her! =)

Also, here's a pic of Zeke!

Isn't he adorable?! I just love his snaggletooth, his lip is almost always caught on it!
I came home last night and he was already gone. I was so sad!! It doesn't look like I'm going to get to keep him. I really thought it was a sure thing as his mom was trying to give him away last month but she must have had a change of heart. Bummer!!

American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

I just finished this book last night (finally) and I have to say it is one of the best books I have read in a really long time. Hopefully I have gotten my reading mojo back! Next on the list is The Shack by WM. Paul Young, which is rather short and supposed to be fabulous.

After reading this review of American Wife I had mentally put the book on my "to be read" shelf. Since I had made a commitment to utilize the public library and stop spending money on books I put the popular book on hold. Two months later my turn for the book came, I tried to read it right away as it's still highly requested and could only be checked out for two weeks without fines. I ended up keeping it a month (oops, sorry!), I felt bad but I had to finish it before returning it and they wouldn't let me renew it!

I was a little hesitant at first because I'm (unfortunately) not really into politics or George W. Bush for that matter.

Although American Wife is fictitious its main character Alice Blackwell is unmistakably modeled after former first lady Laura Bush. It is only safe to assume that her husband, Charlie Blackwell is loosely modeled after former President Bush. I fell in love with both characters of the book and have to wonder now, have I begun to like President Bush more now having read this book? The jury is still out on that one, I'm really not sure.

In the book Alice is a bookish, polite girl that is someone you have to admire. She had a quiet sense of strength that appealed to me. She did not draw attention to herself but when she was in the spotlight, for better or worse, she handled it with a grace and poise that many can only hope to attain one day.

Alice deals with many trials and personal struggles in the book. Struggles that many of us cannot dream of dealing with. There were moments in the book where my head was so wrapped up inside this character I felt like I was her. Her emotions had projected so much onto my own emotions I felt upset when she was upset. I was happy when she was happy.

I love it when I get lost in a story like I did this one. I love being able to identify with a character so strongly you feel sad to have to let them go when you finish the book. Although I like just about every book I finish, I don't find this happening with many characters. I have to wonder what it is about the writer that gets me so engrossed? I haven't quite figured it out, because I believe it's a more subtle talent. A subtle talent I wish I had.

What books have had a powerful impact on you? What characters have you felt so in tune with that while reading their story you felt a part of it?

Rachel Getting Married

Has anyone seen it? I just rented it and am going to watch it. I love Anne Hathaway and hope it's good!!
I have the next two days off, and my original plans for my "weekend" have fallen through so I'm going to get caught up! I need to do some serious reading -- I have been reading American Wife for almost a month now, waaaay too long for me. I need to organize the clothes in my closet and put away the winter clothes and my DVR is getting really backed up. I will find plenty to do!

Crazy couple of days!

I'm doing my first floor set with my new store and it's a HUGE move!

If you have never worked in retail before a "floor set" is when everything in the store moves around and you typically get lots of new merchandise in. Retailers tend to do new floor sets for the new seasons and it's nice because it gives you a chance to really do some hardcore cleaning and organizing. In my case some "Spring Cleaning!" =)

We started last night at 6pm and by midnight we should have had 50% of it done. Let me tell you, we did not. I left at midnight and two other girls stayed until 2:30 am. I was back at 7am and we tried to work on more today but it's next to impossible when you're open. Who wants to shop a store that looks like a tornado blew through it?

The entire move is supposed to be done by 10 am tomorrow morning and unfortunately I think I'm going to fail that test... it's just not going to happen. That's okay though, I want this to be quality moves and have a beautiful, ORGANIZED store when I'm done!!

New addition to the fam...

Since Sunday I have been dogsitting for my roommates best friend's dog. It is the cutest little puggle named Zeke. He's so stinkin' cute it's almost unbearable!!

My roomie and her best friend warned me several times that Zeke can be a handful. They asked me repeatedly if I was sure I could handle him for a full week by myself as both of them will be on vacation. I assured them I was fine, I have grown up with a dog as a pet my entire life. I think can take adequate care of the little pooch. I wasn't too excited about it to be honest though. With starting a new job a couple weeks ago and being in a new relationship I was worried about having time to entertain Zeke.

I'm going to backtrack a little here.

About a month ago best friend asked roomie if we wanted to keep Zeke. Best friend had a baby less than a year ago and is in the process of planning a wedding. She felt like she didn't have time for Zeke anymore, plus best friend's fiance hated the dog. Roomie asked me, I said I didn't care but I couldn't keep him. Roomie told best friend no, that she couldn't take on another pet.

Ok, back to present.

So this week he's been great. We've really bonded! He's been sleeping on my bed and I even considered taking him on my mini day trip today to Minneapolis! Last minute I decided against it because I had never driven in a car with him and figured that 8 hours in the car probably wouldn't be the best time to try it out. Oh yeah, and I couldn't figure out how to work his harness thing....might have been that it was 7am and I hadn't had near enough coffee. Ha!

The BF even loves him and considered keeping him as well. Sweet, right?

Now, for the deal breaker. Roomie thinks best friends fiance is abusive to Zeke. Abusive as in kicks Zeke and tosses him around. Roomie says whenever she is over at their house Zeke acts really scared of fiance and stays far away from him. At their house Zeke spends all his time in the basement, practically locked down there and in the summer time out in the backyard. It doesn't sound like he gets much personal attention or play time with anyone.

I'm sick over this. The little guy is such a sweetie and he's not bad at all! The only thing he does that is remotely bad is eat the cat food, and I mean, what dog doesn't do that?!

My roomie is still on vacation and doesn't get back til Sunday but I'm hoping she lets me keep him. He's so flippin cute and no animal deserves to be neglected like he is! =(

Keep your fingers crossed for me that roomie doesn't mind and best friend wants to give him to me!!!

I left my camera at a friends house on Saturday, but once I get it back I promise I will post pictures of him!!

This is what torture looks like...

My store is selling the Twilight DVD. We received it last week and I have had to walk by it EVERY DAY since last Tuesday.

I. want. it. so. bad.

Why can't I just bend the rules and buy it early? Why, why why??

Because I am a rule follower. Yes, that is me. I follow the rules when it comes to my precious (and new!) job.

Edward, you will just have to wait two more agonizing short days.

First book signing!

Ever get that "I'mjustsoexcitedcan'tsleepfeeling"? Who doesn't right?? Well, I have it!

Tomorrow I'm driving up to Minneapolis for a book signing with Jodi Picoult! She is one of my favorite authors ever and has written some amazing books like My Sister's Keeper and The Pact. I cannot wait!!

I haven't had a chance to read her newest book, Handle with Care but it's next on my list! I can't wait to get it started!

Another reason I am super excited is I finally get to meet Lesli from Pretty Random Thoughts! We almost crossed paths once last August at the Iowa State Fair, but didn't get a chance to meet. This time we're going to meet up at Borders for the signing then out to lunch! Fun!!

Letter to younger self

This is the new prompt over at Twenty Something Writers. This is my first time participating, I've thought about it but just kept forgetting! Check this one out, there is a giveaway associated with this one!

The Prompt:

If you were able to communicate with your younger self, what would you say? Would you warn yourself of the things that are to come? Would you tell yourself to avoid certain people? Write a letter to yourself at a younger age. Feel free to tell yourself anything that you’d like to. Let us know what age of yourself you are writing to.

Letter to myself 12 years ago...

Dear Amber,

You're about to be a sophomore in high school! You've accomplished one year already!

So what if your best friend is moving away, you will visit her all the time. She's only two hours away. In no time you may have your own car, and can drive to visit her.

Speaking of cars, remember to thank your grandfather for all of his help. He was very proud of you for paying him back for your half, and on time. He may not be around much longer, so don't take for granted all he has done for you.

We all know you don't want to be pigeon holed to one "clique" and you enjoy mingling with all types of crowds, but hanging out at the "smokers corner" right off of school grounds is probably not a good idea. Something tells me they are not smoking just cigarettes. Consider yourself warned.

Just because you don't make the cheerleading squad the first time around does not mean it is the end of the world. Keep trying. Do not get discouraged, you will get there. In the meantime, do not forget to thank all the amazing girls that are already on the squad that are your friends and helping you. Their help will mean the world to you later.

Some guys are scum. One guy in particular that has been dating one of your close friends for a long time is particularly scummy. He will smooth talk you. Don't get lost in his compliments and endearments. He is bored and is too cowardly to do anything about it. His mistakes will tarnish your character if you're not careful.

Don't forget about that cute boy in biology. He may be a year younger and have braces but nobody will treat you as sweet as he does. Be careful with his feelings.

Stop ignoring your mother. You've always confided in her, don't stop now. She will always be your best friend. Don't stop going telling your father about all your dreams and aspirations. Right now it seems impossible but you're very much like him. He has the same free spirit as you do and will encourage you to go wherever your heart desires.

Hang on to who you are, do not settle for anything less than what you want...

Love,

The older and (somewhat) wiser Amber

PS: Stop pretending your hair is naturally curly. It's not. Wear it straight and remind your mother that the 80s are over.

What would you tell your younger self?

On a lighter note...

about vampires.. (haha) I'm super excited for Twilight to come out next week! If I was 13 years old I would so be having one of those midnight showings, aka sleepovers, at my house!

Ahhh, Edward! :)

Trying to just be happy!

Things are going great right now. Honestly, I could not ask for more.

The past couple of years haven't been the greatest, especially the past six months or so. The only good thing going for me was my job, then it was announced they were shutting down.

So now, things are going great and what do I do? I'm bracing myself for the worst. Waiting for something to happen because things are just going too well. I know this is ridiculous. I want to just be happy and accept the good things that are coming my way. Every time I think I'm beginning to change, I do something stupid to mess it up.

I try the whole positive thinking thing and I appear to be sunny and optimistic but honestly I'm not. I'm skeptical of just about everything. I'm just good at hiding it. Until you get to know me better it's blatantly clear what a cynic I am.

Someone give me a bottle of vodka drink.

Check it out!

One of my favorite people in the entire world has started a blog, Scintillating Salmagundi. Check it out and show her some love!! :)

Pretty kitty!

Yeah, I know. Fourth post today, I'm on a roll. I just couldn't help posting this pic of Libby:

Doesn't it look like she's winking at me?? I like to think she is! :) Such a pretty girl... my pride and joy!

Going public...

So, I'm thinking of "going public" with my blog. Most of my friends do not know how to get to it. They know I maintain one but I told them if they found it to just not tell me.

Honestly what just got me thinking about it was joining Twitter. There is a spot for your blog URL and I almost didn't think twice about putting it in there. I know there is a spot for it on Facebook too, but I didn't even consider putting it on there...

What do you all think? Should I just bite the bullet and do it? What am I afraid of? Is there anything on here I should be ashamed of? I do not think so, I try really hard not to talk about people behind their backs and if I do I try to make sure its something I would say to their face.

I think I'm going to comb through my blog, make sure there isn't anything I wouldn't want them to know and "go public"!!

To me this just seems like a big deal because my blog is more like a journal to me... so I'm not going to make a snap decision and going to think about it for a couple days!

****UPDATE****
I did it! I linked my blog to FB, but I deleted it from the newsfeed. If people find it, it's because they're looking at my contact info which is fine by me. I do not write this blog to get famous, or become a writer by any means. It is mainly just an outlet for my thoughts, kind of like a journal but not that private. My stomach is doing little somersaults right now, because I just put myself out there but it also feels really good!

Who's in need of a vacation??

I. am. so. sick. of. winter.

I need flip flops, sun, sand, beach, sunglasses and a tan. I know, I live in Iowa and finding all of that is hard (unless I visit a dirty, gross lake!) so I will settle with just flip flops, sun, sunglasses and a tan! I've even started tanning at the salon to try and look like I've got that sun kissed glow!

This winter has really given the Midwest a beating, a long beating. We have had snow on the ground since November! I may be exaggerating just a little bit... but I know it's pretty close to right.

Three of my closest friends are on vacation RIGHT NOW. It's really depressing me because I'm itching to go somewhere!!

One friend is in Vegas for her hubby's birthday. Another friend is in Miami just to get away and soak up some sun. My roommate left for Ireland today for a two week vacation with her mom for her 30th birthday. Yes, she will be in Dublin for St. Patrick's Day. I'm green with envy -- haha, pun intended.

Since I just started my new job I will not be eligible for vacation until September. At that time I will have to take two weeks vacation, 40 hours of sick time and two personal days and am only allowed to take them during the months of September, October, or January. If I don't I will lose it all. That's a lot!

I'm thinking I will take a week in September and a week in January. Then sprinkle in the sick and personal days throughout the rest.

Now, I just have to figure out what I want to do in September.... by then I will be going out of my mind wanting to go SOMEWHERE!! Ha!

New eyeglasses!!

My glasses have finally come in! The last pair of glasses I bought was probably in high school and they lasted me all the way up to my senior year of college before they broke completely. Lets just say I was in desperate need of glasses!!!

My contact prescription is -9.00, so basically without contacts or glasses I cannot see anything! Everything is a big blur! Each year I got a lecture from my optometrist that I needed to purchase glasses in case of an emergency! Each year I was just too cheap to do it, and my insurance only covered contacts OR glasses. Not both.

I can't find a picture of the frames I got, but you will never believe where I found them! Walmart Vision Center! They were cheap and they're super cute! I was looking for very specific details in a pair of glasses and if you remember from this post, was having a hard time!

I wanted black frames, but not too trendy because I planned on wearing these for years and did not want to hate them in two years. I also wanted thick sides (or whatever you call the ear rest things) so that it would sort of hide the thickness of the lenses. I got the lenses shaved down, but they're still thick! Here are a few pictures:

So far, I really really like them! I'm trying to wear them a lot at home to give my eyes a break. At first it felt really funny and I kept getting that sort of lightheaded feeling but other than that I love them! The style is also so basic that I don't think they will ever go out of "style"! They're too simple! :)

Going back to work TODAY!

I'm so excited! I start work today!!! It feels like the first day of school and I need to have my picture taken in a dress standing out on the front porch with my lunchbox and big boxy backpack!!

After 31 days of not working, can you tell I'm excited?!

Wish me luck! :)

The Bachelor...

How does everyone feel about the events from tonight's Bachelor?

Personally, I think it's total bullshit. Sounds like ABC is up to it and I believe they made a huge mistake. Huge. One friend of mine said she doesn't even want to watch it anymore, she's that ticked off.

I'm not sure what to believe. I definitely think that DeAnna was paid to come back, but I just don't want to believe that Jason would purposely do that to both girls for a big paycheck.

In my attempt to be optimistic, maybe Jason and Melissa really were having problems and ABC caught wind of it and thought, "ratings, ratings, ratings!" and thought to themselves.... "Let's convince Jason to dump Melissa on the air and ask Molly back in front of viewers and we'll pay him for it!"

I just don't see how this could have been the plan from the get-go. Are people really that cruel? I really hope not.

Books, books and more books!

I have SOOOO many books on my TBR read shelf, it is getting out of control.

Like I mentioned in my last post I haven't been able to sit down and read lately and it's been bugging me because I really want to! I think I know a couple of the reasons why. 1.) The last time I was really into a book was when I was reading all four of the Twilight books (I read them right in a row) and 2.) I'm not really at a comfort place in my "home" yet. Once I move into a place by myself it might change and 3.) The past four months have been one of the hardest times in my life. With the store closing, running into my ex, breaking it off again with my ex, moving in with a roommate for the first time in four years and dealing with unemployment (ugh), it's been rough! That leaves little room in my stressed head to focus on a book!

Things are definitely looking up though. It's all happened at once for me and I couldn't be more grateful! I got a new job and started seeing an awesome new guy - which is still going amazing!

Little off the subject but today we were texting (which we are usually doing all day, we're both texting machines!) and we had plans to watch movies tonight... here's how our conversation went...

Me: I know we're watching movies tonight but there's a show I really want to watch at 7...I don't suppose you watch the Bachelor? haha!

Him: Lol, we can watch it. You pick what to eat though.

Me: Wow, a guy that will watch the Bachelor with me, I think you're a keeper! :)

Him: :) I think you might be too

Me: I might be?! Lol ;)

Him: I'm pretty sure I caught a "might" in your text, lol

Me: Lol

Cute or is that a little gag-inducing? I'm really enjoying spending time with him, I hope it works out!!!

Anyway, back to my original subject...

Jodi Picoult's new book, Handle with Care is due to come out tomorrow and I've been super excited for it. Then I remembered that one of the Walmarts out here puts books out early all the time. I have no idea how they make that mistake because I'm pretty sure that is a big deal and they're not supposed to do it, but it's fine with me! I'm impatient!

So today, I run out there to check and see if it's there annnnnd, there it is! YES!! :)

Another book to add to my TBR shelf!!

Now for my dilemma, I hate being in the middle of more than one book and right now I'm currently in the middle of THREE and about to pick up a FOURTH!

I have had American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld on hold at the library for months after Brandy's recommendation to read it. Since it is so requested it is only a two week rental so I kind of need to get it done.

Should I put JP's new book on hold to finish American Wife or should I go ahead and start the fourth book?

Keep in mind I start my new job tomorrow...

On the road again...

Since graduating high school in 2000 I have moved 15 times

1.) 2000-2001: Move from my parents house into the dorms at ISU
2.) Summer 2001: Move out of dorms back into my parents house
3.) 2001-2002: Move into the KD house at ISU
4.) Summer 2002: Move out of the KD house back to my parents
5.) 2002-2003: Move back into the KD house
6.) Summer 2003: Move to Kansas City for an internship with Ralph Lauren Childrenswear
7.) 2003-2004: Move back into my parents house (temporarily until I graduate)
8.) Summer 2004: Move to Kansas City, move in with my aunt for the summer
9.) 2004-2005: Get my first apartment with my ex-boyfriend's best friend's girlfriend (wow, did ya catch all that?)
10.) 2005-2006: Move across town into another apartment by myself -- first place completely on my own! Yay!
11.) 2006-2007: Move back to Iowa for work, move in with parents (temporarily again)
12.) March 2007-September 2007: Move to South Carolina for work
13.) September 2007-November 2007: Move in with my parents (temporarily - aaaagain)
14.) November 2007-November 2008: Move into another one bedroom apartment
15.) November 2008-present: Move in with a friend who owns a (small) two bedroom house

Is this normal? I really don't think it is.

The point of this post is, I'm thinking of moving again. The reason I moved into my friends house was to save money, but I'm really only saving about $3-400 per month. With this new position I can afford to live on my own again.

My roommate isn't a bad roommate, she's actually a great roommate, and I'm really worried she's going to take it personal but it's totally me! There's been a lot of changes in myself that I have noticed since moving in with her, and I don't like it!

- I'm not near as neat and clean as I used to be, and I think it's because I feel weird cleaning someone else's house.
- I hardly ever cook because her kitchen is so small and my kitchen supplies are boxed up because there is no room for them in her cupboards.
- I'm not reading near as much as I used to. Not sure if living with her has anything to do with it but I kind of think it does.
- I'm drinking a lot more than I normally would because she drinks so much.
- I'm irritable/moody a lot more lately. Constant PMS!

Those are pretty much the only things I have noticed in myself, but it's really bothering me!

Today I grabbed an Apartment Finder catalog and I'm going to start looking for a place. I'm thinking I will make my 16th move in May. Maybe this time I will stay awhile...I definitely have to think about it... I'm not 100% sure and do not want to make any snap decisions.
