Last month I succumbed to the Fifty Shades of Grey phenomenon... in fact, it was the only book I read in April. Last month was so busy, I hardly had time to read for fun, which, was a shame because reading is my main stress reliever. Yeah, April was a stressful month. :/
Anyway.
I read the first book in this series and .... I'm sorry to say, I wasn't that big of a fan! I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it either. The main character, Ana, was very unrealistic to me, and Christian kind of got on my nerves. Both characters were just odd, and I didn't get them. A friend sent me the second and third book, so I will probably give them a second chance because A. I'm curious what Christians past is all about B. I want to know what happens between Ana and Christian and C. I'm still a little intrigued.
The writing is not good. I would categorize it with Twilight for the quality of writing, but is it engaging? Yes. There were definitely some parts that made me blush a furious shade of red, and I would NOT read this book in the school setting (trust me). Also, if you have an e-reader, buy the electronic version. I was extremely happy that I went that route instead of the physical copy like I usually do.
Another tip? Ladies, set aside your inner (or outer, ha) feminist, because some parts will literally piss you off. I had to keep reminding myself, it's just a book.
Have you read Fifty Shades of Grey? What did you think? If not, are you intrigued yet?
Today I am linking up with Heather at Blonde Undercover Blonde for Book Club Friday!

The first book was awful but the way it ended really left no choice but for me to buy the 2nd one! I suggest you read the 2nd one. It's sooooooo much better than the 1st. The 3rd as well. The 2nd is my favorite. So much character growth on both parts & it's just an overall better book.
Granted, her "inner goddess" still comes out a lot, much to my annoyance, but whatever. LOL
I'm starting the first book after I finish the book I'm currently reading. I have such high expectations for it, I hope I'm not left down!
Everyone seems to be reading these. I may have to give in. ;0
I wasn't a fan either. Christian Grey annoyed me enough that I didn't read the second.
I was super close to getting a restraining order against Christian for Ana. I hated this book and my inner feminist would not shut up!
Everyone seems to be talking about or reading this! Most seem to either love it or absolutely hate it! Must say, I am definitely intrigued! Think I'm going to have to see what it's all about!
I haven't read it. I hadn't even heard of it until Lisa said that the waiting list for it at her library was 1500+ people! So I went and checked it out and it doesn't seem that interesting to me, to be honest. What is the hype all about?
I am reading this book right now and feel similar to you. The writing quality is crap and it's really not that engaging. Ya it's erotic and sexual, but so what? In my opinion those parts aren't really adding much to the plot. I am really intrigued about Christian's past though so I might read the 2nd book just for that. I haven't gotten to the REALLY sexual parts yet as she JUST signed the contract (I've had a busy few weeks so haven't made much time to read and I wouldn't say this book is "can't put it down" for me) so maybe I'll be more taken aback when I get to the really sexual parts. Lol
i have not read this series yet and i don't think it will, sounds like too much sex and bad writing for me lol
happy friday!
The next 2 books are sooooo much better! The writing still sucks but the storyline totally had me hooked!!
I haven't, BUT I have read a LOT of similar fanfiction and have a lot to say on the subject of feminism, safer sex, ex. presented in the books. I'm going to read them and do a mini-series, I think on a lot of the things in there. When some of the kinkier stuff makes it to the mainstream there's a lot that folks who normally read that kind of thing don't relate to people who don't so I'm hoping to sort of bridge the gap.
I haven't read it but it's on my list of books to read. I'm just not sure how I feel about it!
I haven't read it and don't plan to read it... I think I am too much of a prude to enjoy it. As I told my friends - if I read it, I'd have to go to confession. ;) So I am going to skip it! They all laugh at me about that comment, but oh well. I am the nun of the group, I guess. :)
I just ordered all 3 books and I can't wait to read them!
I have absolutely no interest in this book. But I'm also not the person who reads books that are popular right now. (Still haven't read The Hunger Games or Twilight and I *just* read the Harry Potter series last summer!) The plot doesn't interest me all that much and I'm not sure I would enjoy it.
So excited to have found another Des Moines blogger! :)
I felt the same way about this book! I haven't decided if I'll read the next two books yet...
It was voted for my book club's pick for June - so I will be reading it then. I'm okay with erotica-esque books. I have no shame :P
I'm not sure if I will like it or not though. It seems you either love it or hate it. I guess I will find out :)
I just got done reading all three and I actually really loved them. I agree that the writing isn't that great and yes Ana did get on my nerves some with her inner goddess comments but I loved Christian and loved how his story played out.
I haven't read it yet. But with all the hype it's getting I want to read them sooner rather than later. Plus I have to read it before the movie comes out.
