Day 11-Favorite tv shows

Hello, hello! Can you believe it is already Thursday?! This week is flllllying by and I'm loving it! I don't know if I mentioned it, but I am working 9 days in a row and it's wreaking havoc on my brain right now. I cannot believe I am even keeping up with this challenge, but a challenge is a challenge! I will not admit defeat! :)

SO, my favorite shows, eh?

I love tv, but I hardly have any time to watch. My poor DVR is full almost all the time, I'm overly ambitious with what I think I can watch and record so much but rarely have time to watch. These are the shows I try not to miss!

Modern Family - love this show SO MUCH! Everyone is hilarious and the gay couple is fantastic.

The Middle - started watching this show b/c it's on after Modern Family and I love it equally as much! The only think I kinda hate? It's supposed to be based on "the midwest" and kinda makes us look dumb. So, not true or cool. But, still funny.

Dancing with the Stars - I usually watch this super fast and while I'm doing a million other things. I could take this or leave it. I hardly ever agree with the judges, but then again, I am not a professional dancer.

The Big Bang Theory - this show is freaking fantastic! If I refuse to miss this one and watch it almost immediately when I get home Thursday nights

How I Met Your Mother - another great show that I love! I think it's pretty realistic in the storylines in regards to how mid-to upper 20 somethings think and act (besides Barney, I mean he's hilarious but so not realistic!)

Keeping up with the Kardashians - I love this family! I can't wait until next season, it looks like a good one!

Grey's Anatomy - I admit, this show is definitely losing it's finesse that it had when it first came out, but I'm still loyal and have to watch! I sure miss Izzie and George though!

House Hunters - Love HGTV and this is my favorite show on that channel! If I start watching an episode I HAVE to finish it because I just HAVE to know which house they choose.

Well, I have class in about 30 minutes so I better skedaddle! Hope everyone has a great day!!

What shows are on your "must-see tv' list?

Day 10-Something you're afraid of

Me?

Afraid?

Psh!

Yeah right!

I'm the bravest women ever!

Just kidding.... I have lots of little irrational fears (and a few big, rational ones. ;) )

I'm afraid of....

snakes
the dark
scary movies - I hate them!
my parents dying
Libby or Zeke dying
my sister dying
Ok, any member of my family dying (clearly)
getting fired - I've never been fired!
drowing
burning alive in a house fire
getting in a car accident

Ok, so I'm going to stop right now because... umm.... isn't everyone afraid of this stuff? I mean, really? It's not like I'm a hermit that cowers in my bed all day hiding out in the house because I'm scared of getting in a car accident!

Something I am truly, 100% afraid of is the possibility of me never getting married and having children.

I seriously think about this one and it devastates me. I know I would be okay because I have a wonderful network of friends, a great career (and working on a new one!), and a fantastic immediate and extended family but I want to create my own family and find that guy that I can call family.

When I get down thinking about the possibility of this not happening I think about something one of my best friends Shannon said to me once. She said,

"Amber, that won't happen to you. The possibility of you not getting married is impossible because people like you don't just not get married. It's silly to even think about it. So, stop worrying about it."

It's a fear of mine, but when I start to get scared I think of what Shannon said to me and I smile. :)

Day 9: Picture of my friends

I have the best group of friends. They're amazing and I thank my lucky stars everyday for them. There are four of us that we call the "3 Gs" which is this made up sorority that we started and it just kind of stuck. We still use the term 3Gs and everyone thinks we're nuts but we don't care! :)

Ok, so since I kind of already did this on day 6 I thought I would just include MORE pictures with a few blasts from the past! (no laughing!) ;)

First 3G wedding!

Second 3G wedding - and yes, they literally "took the plunge"! Ha!

Some of us in the pool. Can you find me?

Second 3G "in-law"! :)

VERY OLD PICTURE! I was probably 20 years old...

I think this was the first 21st birthday... got a little out of hand, as you can see... :)

Yeah, we thought we were baaad to the bone! Haha! This was probably my freshman year of college.

Ugh, someone should of told me brown hair does not look good on me!

The cake they got me for my 24th birthday!

Ok, so I'm sure you laughed! How could you not? It's okay :)

Hope you enjoyed all these fun pics! I had a ton of fun going through them!

Day 8

Day 8-A place you've traveled to

I have not traveled near as much as I would like to! But, one place that I absolutely loved was New York City!

The spring of my junior year of college I spent a week there doing a field study. A group of 10 or so fashion majors spent 7 days hopping around NYC visiting fashion houses and other companies relating to the fashion industry. Sounds like fun, right?! It was!

We went to the Ralph Lauren Polo house

We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art

We visited The Gap's headquarters for product design and development (cool!)

and

Ralph Lauren Childenswear headquarters, which at the time was a separate company from the original RL. Through this visit I scored my internship, so that was pretty cool! (Sorry, I couldn't find a pic!)

Other fun things we did on this trip was visit Ground Zero. Here is what it looked like in 2003!

I also really loved Times Square! It was sooo cool! We saw Thouroughly Modern Millie on Broadway and it sparked an interest in seeing every Broadway show I possibly could!

This was such a great trip and I can't wait to go back someday as an "adult"! When I was there I was just barely 21!

What is your favorite place that you have travled??

Day 7

Day 7-Favorite movies

Yep, I'm officially a day behind. I came home sick from work Friday afternoon and slept straight through the night all the way until Saturday morning. Actually, it was almost Saturday afternoon! I had to work at 1pm so I didn't get up until 11:30. That was.... ok, doing math.... over 20 hours of sleep! I don't know if I have ever done that! I feel a little better though, although I came home from work last night and went straight to bed and I am still in bed now. (My books are are surrounding me, taunting me, saying, you need to study! Study! Study!)

So, that is why I am a day behind. My body started rebelling on me.

One good thing happened this week though! I got an A on a test that I for sure thought I was going to get a C on. I was so shocked when there was a big red A on the top (my prof has an elementary background, she even uses bells to get our attention). So, now I have A's in both my classes, although, they're below 95%, so their not too secure! =/. That is the pessimist in me talking, I'm going to work hard to keep those As!!

Ok, on to the challenge! My favorite movies!

I looooove movies. I went through a phase where I bought a new dvd every week, but I don't do that anymore. Actually, I haven't had much time to watch movies lately. I really want to go see Conviction while it's in the theaters, I just love Hillary Swank! She's fantastic! Has anyone seen it yet?

Some of my favorite movies are:

Almost Famous
Miracle
The Family Stone
Because I Said So
Elf
Serendipity
You've Got Mail
Any Harry Potter movie
We Are Marshall
P.S. I Love You
A Lot Like Love

Almost Famous is probably my all time favorite! Plus, do you notice a slight theme here? Sports movies and Christmas movies. I'm not a big sports fan but I just love sports movies, they are so inspiring! Plus, Christmas movies are the best. Christmas is my favorite holiday and movies based around Christmas really put me in the spirit!

What are some of your favorite movies?

Day 6

Day 6 allllmost didn't happen, but... here it is! :)

A picture of something that makes me happy...

There are lots of things that make me happy but nothing makes me happier than my group of friends! We are all super close and have that type of unconditional love that is so hard to find in girlfriends. (girls are vicious!)

Here is the five of us sometime over the summer when we were able to get all of us together. It hardly ever happens! When it does, you can bet on a wild night! :)

(Don't you just love the view of the sky in the background? It was totally acciental that it was included in the picture, but I just love it! So pretty! )

What are your group of girlfriends like?

Day 5!

Whew! Five day stretch of daily blogging... are you proud? I am feeling pretty good about it! I'm loving your responses and so far it's definitely stirring my love for blogging.

Ahhh, warm fuzzies. :)

So for day five I am supposed to discuss my sibling! Singular, because I've just got one! ;)

My sister is four years younger than me and is seriously one of the coolest people I know. Although, we couldn't be more different and for many years we didn't mesh well and actually... we still don't mesh well. When we're fighting, just get out. Turn your phone off and get far, far away. It's going to be a blowout.

Things are better though. Don't worry! We actually live together now and it's going very well. About six months ago my sister's roommate bailed on her and my sister pretty much freaked out because she couldn't find another roommate and couldn't afford to live on her own. At the time I was living alone and my lease was almost up. I knew that I might be going back to school and I wouldn't be able to afford luxuries like living alone anymore so I decided to get a place with her. We're doing great and have only had one blowout so far. (That is a major accomplishment for us!)

My sister is super messy and I am very neat. She is a social butterfly, where as I am not the life of the party. My sister is naturally athletic and I am kind of a klutz. My sister is about 5"8' and I am under 5"3'.

But, at the end of the day she is my sister and I would bend over backwards for her! :)

(My sister and I are on the right here pictured with two of our aunts)

What kind of a relationship do you have with your siblings?

Day 4

Your parents!

Everyone's got the best parents in the world, right? Of course we do! But mine are the best. Really, they are!

Meet Dave and Denise.

(4th of July 2010. I'm on the left with my parents dog, Parker and my sister is on the right with her dog, Chico.)

They met in Washington State when Denise was 20 and Dave was 24. Denise had just moved out there from Iowa for work and Dave was a former hippie from Missouri that had traveled across the US hitchhiking and ended up in Washington working for the railroad.

After that, I really don't know! I just know that I came along! :)

My mom is one of my best friends and she's one of the first people I go to when I need something. There is very little I am uncomfortable talking with my mom about. We have that kind of relationship and I am so grateful for it.

My dad always says he's a free spirit and that I am too. Hello! He was a bona fide hippie. Long hair and no shoes all the time. Well, in the 60s at least. His hair is short now. :) Today he is who I go to when I feel the need to spread my wings. He is always encouraging me to travel, pursue more education and push myself beyond my limits. Can't is a word that is not in his vocabulary and I truly think this man thinks he can do anything. It is very inspiring!

What are your parents like? Are you closer to you mom or dad?

Day 3!

Your first love

Ahhhh, young love. Young, puppy dog, raw true love. Not an easy thing to forget, that's for sure.

Mine's a long story, so grab a cup of coffee and a cozy blanket and get settled!

The summer I was 13, right before high school. I was always with my two good friends, Sarah and Sarah. One of the Sarah's didn't go to my school so she had several friends we didn't know, one of them being a boy named Drew (short for Andrew).

Well, Sarah introduced the other Sarah to Drew's best friend, Mike and me to... you guessed it, Drew!

Drew and I instantly hit it off. I mean, instantly! I didn't know what to make of this. I had never felt this way before - and honestly I don't think I have since. Maybe nothing can ever compete with the feelings you have for a boy when you're that young and every emotion is so engulfing and powerful. Comparing anything today to how I felt then just isn't fair. I'm not the same person.

Everything about our relationship was typical of that age. We fought and broke up, we made up, and would talk on the phone for hours, we cheated on each other, we wrote each other gushy love letters, we pissed each other off on purpose but through it all we really knew each other. He knew me and I knew him. We dated off and on throughout high school, but ended up drifting apart as we got older.

Have no fear though...

We found our way back to each other my freshman year of college through a girl that is now one of my best friends. At the time, she was dating Drew's older brother. When she first mentioned who her boyfriend was, I was like... uhhhh, I think I know his little brother. She immediately got to work planning a surprise reuniting Drew and I. Surprise it was! One night I was sitting in her dorm room and there was a knock at the door, she asked me if I could get it and without even thinking that was unusual, I did. Behind the door was Drew and his brother. Talk about shock!

From there we dated off and on again from my freshman to junior year of college. We eventually broke up and lost contact again once I left for my internship the summer before my senior year.

It wasn't over though!

Six years later in the fall of 2008 some mutual friends of his and mine were having a costume party. My friend (the one that reunited us) and I were invited, not thinking about the possibility of Drew being there we excitedly planned our costumes and got ready for the party. The night we were getting ready it occured to me that he would probably there! How could I have been so dumb?!

Of course he was there and of course we got back together agaaaain. It's like we're magnets or something. We spent the next few months together, but both knew that we weren't a good fit. We knew it wouldn't last. I can't explain why... it just doesn't work. Being friends doesn't work either.

So, right now we have lost touch again. I'm sure I've got his phone number somewhere and I can obviously get it from our mutual friends but that wouldn't be a good idea. Sometimes I get really sad and miss him, but I know ultimately I am better off. His friends feel the same way... he's currently dating another "Amber" and his good friend always tells me that he wished I was the "Amber" he was dating and that the first time he brought this girl around his friend thought she was me until she got there and he saw it was not me. Far from it, actually.

All those years after college when we lost touch the second time I wondered if he felt the same way I did. Did he consider me his first love? Does he still carry a torch for me the way I do for him? I got all those questions answered two years ago. We talked a lot about how we felt about each other back then and said all the things we never did before. I think it was the closure I needed. I needed to know that he would always have a soft spot for me like I do for him. I needed to know that he loved me just like I loved him.

So, that is the story of my first love! Oh, how I wish I had an old picture or an old letter! Unfortunately, I do not and I have no idea what happened to them all! :(

Will you always hold a torch for your first love? Do you still keep in touch?

Day 2!

Hello, hello! It's day 2 of the challenge, so like a good Monday should be, let's get this going! :)

Day 2-Meaning behind your blog name

A Little Pink in the Cornfields is supposed to be a throwback to my homestate, and my girlie-ness... There really isn't anything else to explain besides that. No, I do not live on a farm and there is not fields of corn in my backyard (although there is a couple blocks away...). Yes, I love pink and am a pretty typical girlie girl. If something comes in pink, I probably want it.

So, that's the meaning behind my blog name. What's the meaning behind yours?

Day 1

Well good morning everyone! How was your weekend? I am so sad to see Sunday here hopefully it goes by nice and slow... right? ;)

So without further ado, shall I get going?

Day 1-Introduce, recent picture, 15 interesting facts

Recent picture:

Here is a picture of me (in the middle) with four of my closest friends. I think the five of us were together for a friends birthday. It only happens a few times a year when we're all together but when we do it's always a good time! :)

Introduction:

I am Amber a 28 year old girl (woman?) living in the Midwest and loving life! I work for a major US retailer and run one of the busiest stores in the company, it for sure keeps me busy! I am also working on my master's degree part-time at Drake University and I absolutely love it! I'm so glad to back in the classroom learning, I feel like I'm using my brain at work but I'm not really learning, ya know? I have a wonderful family that I am so grateful for! My parents live about 20 minutes away from me and I have recently rented a condo with my sister who is 4 years younger than me. We are having a great time living together, but I think the dogs are enjoying it more! I have a black puggle named Zeke and she has a black and white chihuahua named Chico and they adore each other. I'm so glad they have a buddy for those long days my sister and I work! I have a great group of friends that I am also extremely grateful for. We have been friends since the beginning of college and I love when we can all get together -- it doesn't happen too often, unfortunately! Then, last but certainly not least I have been dating an amazing guy for the past few months that has shown me what a real man is and is slowly but surely getting me to trust guys again -- I didn't think it would happen this fast after my last break up but... I guess I should expect the unexpected! :)

15 interesting facts:

1. I don't like watermelon (or any kind of melon for that matter)
2. I want to be a special ed or esl teacher when I am done with my masters
3. I have a cat named after a job I used to hold
4. Mouth noises gross me out, or the sounds of people/animals eating
5. I think Jimmy Fallon is so cute and I have a mini crush on him :)
6. I chopped my hair into a bob last summer and am still desperately trying to grow it out
7. Kraft spiral macaroni is the only mac and cheese from a box I will eat
8. I love healthy living and cooking blogs but I rarely work out and I hardly ever cook
9. House Hunters is one of my all time favorite shows, it gives me ideas!
10. My favorite wardrobe staples are the pieces I got for dirt cheap on the clearance racks
11. I wear a claddagh ring (Irish love ring) but I am not Irish
12. I am a 1/8th American Indian but you would never know it! My dad on the other hand is DARK!
13. I am trying to visit all 50 states and I am more than halfway there!
14. I have a thing about smells. My apartment has to smell good at all times!
15. I love the water and miss living by the ocean! The lakes of Iowa will have to do for now :)

So there you have it. A recent picture, an intro and 15 of my quirks! See ya'll tomorrow!

Ten on Tuesday!

Hey everyone! It's been awhle since I have done on Ten on Tuesday!! I hope your week is going fabulously! :)

1. What does your work out schedule look like?
Lately, non existent. My excuse is I'm on my feet all day at work, so that is my exercise. Lame, I know. Life has been so hectic, I'm hoping next semester I can incorporate a regular workout schedule but for now the odd run or walk or 30 minutes with Jillian is going to have to suffice.

2. What is your favorite machine to use at the gym?
Definitely the elliptical or the stationary bike. Both are easy to watch tv or read a magazine on and that keeps me going for longer! :)

3. What is your favorite class to take at the gym?
I looooooove Step! I have loved it since I was in college. My freshman year one of my very best friends, Kristi became interested in becoming a group fitness instructor. Now, almost 10 years later she's still doing it! Many times I am her guinea pig..... I vomited after trying to keep up with her during a Body Attack "class". (It was just us two trying it out, so it wasn't really a class.) Other favorites of mine she teaches are Zumba, Kickboxing and Body Pump.

4. Where do you shop for work out gear and clothing?
Wherever... no one place in particular!

5. If you can’t go to the gym, do you have a favorite outdoor activity
A run outside is preferred over the treadmill! I hate the treadmill! Outdoors I also like taking walks and loooove hikes! Too bad I'm in Iowa and there isn't much to hike around here...

6. What about a favorite work out DVD? If so, please share!
I like Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred!

7. Are you more active now or when you were in high school?
I am definitely NOT more active now. In high school I played soccer for my high school in the spring and for a private indoor soccer club in the winter. While also in a "running club" year round to stay in shape for soccer. I was also a cheerleader for football and basketball.

8. How has your dieting/working out philosophy changed since high school?
I am much more knowledgeable now about what I am eating... before I had no idea how to read a nutrition label and didn't really care!

9. What do you do while working out– (i.e., day dream, read, listen to music, gab with a friend)?
I like to watch tv, listen to my ipod or read.

10. What working out resolution would you like to make for yourself this year?
There's not much of the year left... but I guess I would just like to start making it more of a piority again! I have definitely let it go and I can feel the pounds creeping back on. Not a good feeling.

Later!

Grumpy McGrumpster...

Yep, that's me. Grumps. Grumpy. Crabby. Irritable. Negative Nancy. Moody. Snappy. They're all ME!

I have been so grumpy lately and unfortunately I tend to to take it out on the people I love the most.

Last night Nick and I started bowling on a league together and I cannot count the number of times I snapped at him. First, I was annoyed because the league started so late (9:45 pm) then I was annoyed because he didn't remind me to get cash to pay for it, then I was irritated because he kept saying in my ear, "don't be grumpy, smile."

Between some issues I have had going on at work and lots of preparing for two weeks with back to back tests and presentations I have just been sleep deprived and irritable!

I don't know what to do... but I know I need to do something to snap myself out of this funk. I was thinking of trying to get myself on a more structured schedule where I try to go to bed at the same time and wake up at the same time everyday with the goal being walking or running in the morning. I know the natural endorphins from working out will boost my mood, but I am so horrible at getting up in the mornings I just don't think it will happen. I know I should at least try though! Working out in the evenings is really not an option for me... it just won't happen.

I need some sort of incentive program to get myself up! Maybe everytime I wake up and work out I put a $1 or two in a jar and buy myself something that I really want. Maybe the sticker program would work well for me... I know it did for Lesli (at least I think she did something like earning stickers...). Ahh, who knows. Maybe I just need a good vacation.

Have you ever been in a funk like this and how did you snap yourself out of it?

Friday, October 1, 2010

It's finaaaalllly Friday!

Wow, Friday already?!! Sweet! :)

I'm not going to lie, this week has been rough. I was already dreading this week because I had a huge presentation in ed. psych and a test in special education on back to back days. At the end of last week my assistant manager's son came down with chicken pox and she can be a paranoid hypochondriac was worried that she was going to come down with it too for the 2nd time in her life due to her arthritis. (Seriously, I don't know. I'm not a doctor so I'm trying not to be skeptical)

I left work last Thursday trying not to worry about it and enjoy my three day weekend. Shockingly, I got ZERO phone calls or texts from my staff (seriously, very surprised) and I truly enjoyed three days of work-free bliss. When you're in an industry like mine and have that kind of responsibility, you're pretty much always available. It can get exhausting! Not to mention very irritating.

Well, not being contacted all weekend is sort of lie. I did get a phone call on Sunday night. Sunday night my assistant manager said she thought she was coming down with chicken pox and she needed the next morning off to go to the doctor and be sure. Of course I kind of snickered to myself thinking, there is no way she has chicken pox. It's in her head.

She had chicken pox.

Apparently it's a very mild case, but she does have chicken pox and it is contagious. Shit.

Who does that leave to work? Me.

Instead of studying and preparing for my test and presentation as planned, I worked 13 hours on Monday, 10 hours on Tuesday, 5 hours on Wednesday and then 7 hours yesterday. Fitting in study time was interesting.

BUT... everything went smoothly (academically) and I couldn't be happier! Our group got our presenentation results back right away and we got a 99%! Whoo! Seriously!? So happy! Then my test was last night and I know I did well. You just know when you aced a test and.... (BIG GRIN)

Everything worked out and I am off today. I wish I could take a weekend off due to the situation but considering I was off last weekend that just isn't happenin'. DARN!

Speaking of last weekend... I went to an IOWA HAWKEYES game! I just know my grandfather was looking down and smiling like a chesire cat! My entire family is Hawks fans (shocking, I know) besides my mom and I. I felt a bit like a trader, but at the same time it's not like they were playing ISU and I'm all about supporting an Iowa team. It's not like I love my precious Cyclones ANY less!

The game was fun, but I have to admit, the rain made things a bit miserable. We drove over to the Iowa City area Friday night because the game started at 11am on Saturday and we wanted to get up at a somewhat normal hour to tailgate. So, we stayed with Nick's grandparents in Muscatine (I know, I know! It's another post!) and got up at 6am to make it to Kinnick stadium around 8:30ish. The forecast was calling for clear skies all week, then Saturday morning.... Rain. Lots of rain. Talk about adding to the nightmare. Thank you Mother Nature. Thank you.

Nick ran to Wal-Mart to buy us bright yellow ponchos while I was getting ready and when he came back he had a Hawkeyes hat for me to wear so that I wouldn't mind my head getting wet. Thoughtful, right? No I think, errrr I know he enjoyed dressing me up in Hawkeye gear. He's still talking about it a week later and showing people his picture of me on his phone. Ruining my reputation, I tell you...

(We found our seats really early, so I figured we had to take some pictures! )

(After about take 6 I think Nick was getting annoyed with me. )

(Yay! The game is getting started! )

(This is what our mile long walk back to the car looked like. Sad face.)

One of the funniest moments of the day was when I recived this text from my mom...

"We've got the game on tv and it looks like it's raining pretty hard. Please don't tell me you have on a Hawkeye poncho."

I cracked up! At the stadium they were selling ponchos with Hawkeyes all over it. Luckily, Nick was thinking BEFORE we got there and bought ours at Wal-Mart. Whew!

After the game we checked out the Kolona Cheese Factory and bought way too much cheese, then buzzed through the Amana Colonies real quick. I picked up a 7lb bag of oats for less than $3 at an Amish grocery store. I am going to have enough oats for my morning oatmeal for a looooong time.

Once we made it home two hours later (I may have fallen asleep in the car) we both pretty much passed out from exhaustion. I know, we're getting old. We just can't hang anymore! Overall, it was a great weekend. I enjoyed football at Kinnick stadium, but I can't wait to take Nick to a game at Jack Trice stadium and dress HIM up in red and gold. :)
