Can you believe it's November? I really can't. This year has literally flown by... I'm excited for the holiday season, but c'mon, slow down already!
I spent a lot of time this month missing summer. Despite our unseasonably warm weather I couldn't help but feel a tiny pain every time I saw a boat behind a truck (I'm sure it was on it's way to being winterized, boohoo) or I slipped on sandals (my cherished reefs that are practically glued to my feet in the summer).
Summer is over though, and it's time to let go and embrace winter (yeah, I'm in denial. I know).
Yesterday we were scheduled to maybe have our first snow. Instead, we got cold drizzly rain ALL DAY. Even if it had snowed (which it still could overnight, this post is being written early) I'm sure it would melt right away. Due to that horrible forecast, I had one of the classes I taught do their writing prompt on what images come to their mind when they think of 'the first snow.'
(This is the kind of stuff I love. I literally do the writing prompt at the same time they do. Pretty sure they think I'm crazy)
But, aaaanyway. The first snow makes me think of ...
... Christmas coming soon...
....piping hot coffee or hot chocolate...
...cooking decadent, delicious food and indulging...
...bulky sweaters, leggings and boots....
...more boots...
...snowball fights...
...continuing the battle of convincing my friends ice skating is a GOOD idea...
...thick cozy socks...
...snuggling on the couch, preferably with a fire going (too bad I don't have a fireplace anymore :(
...candy canes and Christmas decorations...
...sparkly stuff...

Reading what the kids wrote made me smile. They took it seriously, and it seemed to make them happy. Which, made me happy. I'm with the same kids for the next two days (which, is so nice) and I'm looking forward to what else they write. :)
What does the first snow make you think of? If you live somewhere where there isn't snow - what do you think of when you think of snow? Have you ever seen it?
Wasn't yesterday terrible? And I forgot my rainboots. Booo. First snow makes me think of Christmas anddddd my birthday! Which happen to be the same day. I'm so excited for the holidays!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great writing prompt! YOu are so good at what you do - I love that you do the exercise along with your kids!
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of snow, I think of:
- snuggling up with a warm blanket while reading a good book.
- hot cocoa with mini marshmallows
- building snow forts and tossing snow balls
- warms scarves, hats, and mittens
I am loving fall and am not ready for winter, but I am really nostalgic about the first snow fall. I kind of like it, even though I get sick of it pretty fast. I think the world looks beautiful when I covered with snow, and I yearn for the days when I will have someone to take walks with through the snow or go ice skating with (there is a place to go a block from my condo!). And it means Christmas is coming!! :)
I actually really enjoy fall and winter, maybe more than summer! HOWEVER, I would like winter a lot better if it was 2 months long instead of 4 or 5 (or 6 or 7 like where I grew up!)
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of snow I think of:
-fireplaces
-slippers
-Christmas trees
-snowboarding
-red cheeks
-cuddling
-hot chocolate
Christmas cookies, hot chocolate, eggnog, fireplaces, mittens, cats curled up, wet dogs-that's a few things! :-)
ReplyDeleteWe haven't had any snow yet - but I'm sure it's on its way! The first snowfall always makes me think of Christmas - I can't start my shopping until it snows! And hot chocolate - snow makes me want hot chocolate with marshmallow :)
ReplyDeleteOkay so it wasn't that bad!
ReplyDeleteI do love the winter and I love snow, it's so pretty. I just hate driving in it, especially the first snow fall of the season. I swear every Michigander forgets how to drive in it even though it's only been 6 months.
Ha. I looked at that photo and though, wow, Des Moines looks a lot like NYC! Silly me.
ReplyDeleteWe got our first snow today! It is nice to snuggle up and feel cozy, but mostly I just think about how driving is going to be a pain and flights are going to be delayed. I know, I am a party pooper.
I can't believe winter is already coming and here!!! Snow always makes me think of holidays and time with family. Ummmm CHRISTMAS!! yay!
ReplyDeleteAfter going to college and dealing with snow, my opinion is that snow is awesome... to visit. I'm not a fan of living with snow and having to do all types of everyday errands in it. But I love visiting snow and skiing and playing, but only for a limited time.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the snow. Not a fan of winter really. I do like the holidays. After that...I would be happy if we fast forwarded to summer.
