I've started a book club here in Des Moines with a couple of my friends, and we had our first meeting last night. I cannot believe how nervous I was, but everything went fine!
I've named the book club Books and Bars. I figure why not combine books and our favorite hangouts?
There was only three of us there, but it was perfect for me. Even though I know these girls really well I was still nervous leading the discussion (two glasses of wine did NOT help either, lol). I began to relax a little and I'm really grateful that it was two of my closest friends and a couple of strangers weren't thrown into the mix.
The book we read was Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman and I think it was a perfect book to start out with! We had plenty to discuss and before we knew it two hours had gone by. The three of us learned a little more about each other, which is so exciting when you have known someone for multiple years in a row!
Next month we are reading The Help by Kathrynn Stockett. At first I chose One Day by David Nicholls, but after we got to talking I felt this urge that both of them would love The Help. I loved it so much, that I don't mind re-reading it for the sake of the club. I can't wait to discuss it in a group, I think it's going to give us a TON to talk about.
We are planning on meeting on Thursday, June 30th at 6pm. If you're near the area you should join us! Anyone is welcome!
I am still planning on reading One Day though. After our meeting I made a quick trip to Half Price Books to see if it was there, and it was! For cheap! I have a copy from the library but it's due back
Right now I am reading Sweet Valley Confidential (I'm such a sucker) and I have to say.... I'm not that impressed. I'm hoping I can fly through it today and get started on something new.
What are you reading right now? Do you belong to a book club?
I love this idea!!!
ReplyDeleteSweet Valley...very interested to see how that is.
What a GREAT idea! I would love to be part of a book club but I'm not sure if there are any in my town - maybe I should start one like you :)
ReplyDeleteI won Sweet Valley Confidential on audio--I have yet to read it!
ReplyDeleteRight now I am reading a book by Katrina Kittle about this woman who tells lies...and I can't remember what it is called, but it is pretty good. She starts to wonder what is true & what is not and she has a drinking problem. Makes for interesting reading on the elliptical! Plus I love her books - she wrote Blessings of the Animals, my favorite!
p.s. Re Sweet Valley Confidential--I mean I have yet to LISTEN to it--hee! :-)
ReplyDeleteLoved this! Can't wait for the next one!
ReplyDeleteOh man I soooo wish I could join your book club! This may be the single greatest idea ever!!!
ReplyDeleteI used to have a local club, but our club dissolved as one member is moving this summer and 3 of the other members have kids and it was just getting to tough to get together! But I still have my blogger book club that i participate in. We are reading Something Borrowed this month. it's a fast, easy read, but the whole infidelity thing really bugs me...
ReplyDeleteThere is a reallly popular book club here in Minneapolis called books and bars. It meets just across the river from where I will live so I def want to start attending meetings again once i move!
I'm actually reading The Help right now! And I just picked up Saving CeeCee Honeycutt after seeing it on sale and reading your review on goodreads. I hadn't really heard about it till then.
ReplyDeleteI love that you started a book club, and I love that it's called Books & Bars. It's such a cute idea!
I was part on an online book club for a while, but it sort of fizzled out. I would love to be a part of one again though.
ReplyDeleteI read Sweet Valley Confidential over the weekend, lackluster doesn't even begin to describe it. I was disappointed.
Fun idea! We actually just started one at work and our first book is Sing You Home by Jodi Picoult. We have our first "meeting" next week...
ReplyDeleteOh, this sounds like so much fun! I thought you might be interested in the giveaway I'm hosting for Smathers and Branson. www.domesticsweetheart.com
ReplyDeleteHi Amber... I just came across your blog this evening and was tickled to see a photograph of my novel. Thanks so much for selecting it. I hope you and your book club friends enjoyed CeeCee's adventures!
ReplyDeleteYour blog is gorgeous, love the colors.
How cool!
ReplyDeleteRight now I am reading the 10th book in the Psy/Changeling series by Nalini Sighn. It's a paranormal romance series that I really enjoy.
I'm a book nerd too and hope to join you some time!
