Someday I will be my own boss...

Days like today remind me of why I want to someday be my own boss.

It's not that I can't stand being managed, well, ok, maybe it is that I can't stand being managed.

Today my current district manager (she's filling in temporarily while my permanent DM is out on maternity leave) was in my store and, omg, it was awful. She was on the rampage and she nitpicked everything. Seriously, the entire store, which was about 5 of us working today, was on edge all day.

On top of it all we have been hit hard with tons of new freight to be processed and we had 3000 new clearance items that had to be ticketed. Talk about a load of work to do... I'm exhausted.

Thank goodness I have tomorrow off because I plan on spending it poolside with the 2nd and 3rd Sookie Stackhouse book...

In the meantime I'm evaluating whether or not I can do this job for several years. This amount of stress right now is a little unusual but definitely not unheard of for retail. The other day I was catching up with an old DM of mine that is in her 50s and no longer working. We still keep in touch from time to time and she asked me if I was making sure to take time for myself, because she worked her tooshie off her entire life and it's catching up with her now in her health. It really got me thinking... I know she's right.

  1. I definitely want to do only contract work one day where I have the flexibility to work my own hours and work from home. BUT I will have to establish my career before that will ever be possible, so I'm putting in the work now. LOVE my job a ton (like you) but don't think I can handle the stress forever!

    Relax tomorrow!!

  2. I think it would be AWESOME to own your own clothing store. I've thought about that periodically for many years. My mom always said her dream job would be to be a buyer. But I see how your current job could get to you, especially lately. Several months back, I was in one of my favorite clothing stores which is a chain, similar to the adult version of where you work... The district manager was there and was arguing with the manager in the middle of the store. The manager was trying to tone things down, etc., but I just felt that the district manager was so unprofessional by doing that. Also, it seemed the local staff could do no right in her eyes, yet they're really fantastic--nice, helpful, etc. I don't know, I definitely see the downsides of your job!

  3. I know for me this past week has been a little crazy, but for the opposite reason. My supervisor is on vacation this week, but it seems like everyone else was off last week and catching up on work to do. Which means there is more things to do, but less people to do it. Not very fun...

  7. Definitely remember to take time for yourself and don't work too much of your tushie off! The former DM in her 50s sounds wise and she knows what she is talking about. I used to work my butt off, too, and seemed to be on a perpetual hamster wheel. Now I am on the opposite end of the spectrum and much happier. Of course, it is probably because I got married and that gave me the luxury of slowing down. Just take care of yourself (and your health!)

    Hugs!
